Apostasy

Here is last Wednesday night’s sermon on apostasy. It was a great sermon from, surprising, a faithful Five-Point Calvinist. Pastor Tim points out his faith in the Reformed Doctrines of Grace by won’t let them interfere with the point of Hebrews 6:4-6Open Link in New Window. Hope you enjoy the message as well as I did.

NFL Draft Talk

Chiefs DE: Jared AllenThis man, Jared Allen, is the best defensive player that the KC Chiefs have, bar none. I love my Chiefs and I love him the most on defense. But the man wants out of KC and I don’t blame him with King Carl, who won’t pay big money b/c he didn’t trade Larry Johnson last year before the draft and it ended up hurting him now, is around. I can’t say that I don’t entirely blame Peterson for not giving the big contract with Allen’s 2 DUI’s that caused the All-Star Defensive End a two-game suspension last year. That’s some baggage b/c I believe that next offense is a one-year suspension (could be wrong though.) What is so amazing is that with only playing 14 games, instead of 16, Allen led the league in sacks with 15 1/2 sacks! Here are some articles that summarize the plot of Minnesota and possibly Tampa Bay wanting to trade for the pissed-off Jared Allen–pissed that he didn’t get the fat contract with the Chiefs and now wants out of Dodge–NFL.com, ESPN.com, KC Star.

I say that we trade the guy. I don’t want him to go but I don’t want a disgruntled player in my locker-room creating division and being a distraction to a team that finished last year at 4-12. The Chiefs just don’t need that. Plus with Virginia’s Chris Long possibly falling to us, or even Ohio State’s Vernon Gholston, at #5 makes this very tempting (although I’m not going to say that Long will fall b/c Miami, St. Louis, and Atlanta would take Long and I’m not sure that the Raiders wouldn’t pass on him either). Since the Chiefs would get at least the Viking’s first-round and third-round picks, may be even Minnesota’s second-round instead of the third-round, the Chiefs would have 12 picks! Trade the #5 over all pick in the first- round and get more picks and exploit the deep draft. I just think that letting Allen go is a smart move right now for the Chiefs, unless Allen and the team can come to terms. With the good chance to get a decent replacement, I’m for it. Check out this mock draft from one commenter at the Star’s article and tell me that it isn’t that bad of an idea:

Captain America vs. Captain America???

Cap vs CapI know who the man on the left is. But who is on the right? Is Steve Rogers back from the grave or is this some impostor Captain America? I cannot wait until May 21, 2008 to see who this is!!! Cliffhangers suck sometimes.

More Time with LDS

Today I had an appointment with some more LDS missionaries. We went to McDonalds for some fastfood and to discuss our theological differences. You know, I always feel weird asking God to bless that stuff we call fast-food, but then again it reminds me that I have to believe in miracles to even ask. My good friend Shane Griffin gave me a very good book to read, Letters to a Mormon Elder by one of my favorite teachers/scholars James White. They came on last Tuesday to speak with me and I didn’t have the time last week. Shane gave me to book on Thursday, but I was busy all weekend. Friday and Saturday I was in Lee’s Summit with my Uncle Dwight. Sunday I was at Union Station here in KC, MO to see the Bodies Revealed exhibit. It was a good exhibit but I felt they didn’t need to identify the gender of every body in the exhibit. Of course I was with my youth group too.

Having crammed as much James White in my head as possible, I wanted to discuss the Mormon doctrine of God. Mormons are polytheists, Heavenly Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all separate gods. This is not what the Bible teaches. However, I found that due to my lack of time to really ponder what was in Dr. White’s book, I really couldn’t articulate what I wanted to say. If I had pushed the issue of justification by faith alone and salvation by grace alone, I would have done much better. Justification I can walk through a given passage, exegeting it. Expounding the doctrine of God is more difficult because there is no passage I can just walk through.

I will make these observations. 1.) They did not hide a lot of Mormon theology from me. They spoke of pre-existence and God being an exalted man and them being polytheistic. I really appreciate that. 2.) I did not find their “one in purpose” a very satisfying exposition of Mosiah 15:1-5 from the Book of Mormon. Purposiveness is not in the text, they read it into the document. 3.) The missionaries did not want to stay in Isaiah very long and came back to their own theology. For example, I pointed to Isaiah 45:5-7Open Link in New Window and Deuteronomy 6:4Open Link in New Window and said there is only one God, how can they say their is three gods? 4.) They really had not answer to John 5:17-18Open Link in New Window and John 10:30-33Open Link in New Window and the Jews wanting to stone Jesus for claiming to be Yahweh. However, I messed up on that because I had not established the fact that both Father and Son are referred to as the one God, Yahweh. So with out that being argued, I can’t really hold that against them.

I am to meet with them next week and hopefully God will grant me to be better prepared and that I can share who the God of the Bible is, or may be I might tackle the issue of justification and grace from Romans 3-5Open Link in New Window and Philippians 1-3Open Link in New Window. However, I do know that the little bit of truth I did mange to sneak in God can and does use for his glory, either to harden hearts or to save souls. I pray the latter for these men.

Son, Son, Or Servant and Mark 1:11 Part 3

This is the third post on Mark 1:11Open Link in New Window and its three sources of Genesis 22LXX; Psalm 2:7 LXX; and Isaiah 42:1 LXX. This post will conclude our examination of how Jesus is God’s Son (Genesis 22Open Link in New Window), Son (Psalm 2:7Open Link in New Window) and Servant (Isaiah 42:1Open Link in New Window). Let us get the scene of Mark 1:9-11Open Link in New Window in front of us from the NET,

9 Now in those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 And just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens splitting apart and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my one dear Son; in you I take great delight.”

Again let us see the Greek text of Mark 1:11Open Link in New Window and Isaiah 42:1Open Link in New Window before us so that we can see the parallels.

Mark 1:11 — καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῶν οὐρανῶν σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός ἐν σοὶ εὐδόκησα

This was Pastor Tim’s final sermon on the Gospel according to John. It was an amazing sermon when I think of how much pain there is among those in our congregation.
