Never In A Million Years…

did I think that my letter would have made it on the Alpha and Omega Ministries blog when I sent that in. It is no secret around here that I am a big fan of Dr. James R. White. His ministry has been a large influence on me over the last year or so. My drive to know and learn the original languages of the Bible have been fueled deeply because of Dr. White. My ability to engage in theological conversation has improved from an exegetical point of view because of the ministry of Alpha and Omega Ministries. Since it is the 25th anniversary of the ministry, I wrote a letter of thanks for how much I have grown over the last year. Here is the link to the letter.

What I Don’t Like About the SBC and its Theology

I am a Southern Baptist ordained minister. There are many things that I like about being a Southern Baptist. Their emphasis on the need for missions is just one of the many things I love about the SBC. The fact that the SBC is one of the worlds largest and fastest disaster-response organizations is something that could be seen as a point of pride.

One of the many things that I don’t like about being a Southern Baptist is to look at the SBC’s theology. It is a mixture of Calvinism and Arminianism. For instance, most Southern Baptist (those who are not Calvinists or Arminians) believe in total depravity and eternal security. However they hold to a libertarian view of free will and reject unconditional election, irresistible grace, and limited atonement/particular redemption. But this is very inconsistent. Some of the guys at Theology for the Masses I prefer to talk to about this subject because they are not like this. They are consistent Arminians or Calvinists. Yesterday and today on the radio, Dr. Adrian Rogers–former president of the SBC three times(?)–was preaching in this very inconsistent manner. Drove me nuts! Here is a video where James white critiques the late Dr. Rogers on Romans 8-9Open Link in New Window and shows this inconsistency in all its……I don’t know but I don’t like it.
