Objections to Calvinism Part 8 of 5

I come back again to this ongoing series that addresses some objections that I hear raised against Calvinism. I return to the issue of Evangelism and how it relates to Reformed theology. Unlike the previous post that just tried to show that a Calvinist has grounds to evangelize the lost, specifically it is the Lord and the believer sharing in a joy that only comes from telling the lost about Jesus (cf. Luke 10:17-22Open Link in New Window). A common objection that I have heard recently comes from within my own backyard, so to speak. It is that limited atonement (a.k.a. particular redemption or definite atonement), the L in TULIP, prevents one from telling anyone that Jesus died for that person. Let me clarify and then respond. Green Lantern Movie Ideas

Alex Ross Green LanternYesterday I read the first issue dealing with the new Red Lanterns in the Green Lantern Universe. I really thought this brutes (I guess?) were cool and can be really good if done right. Being in the capable hands of Geoff Johns that shouldn’t be a problem. But that got me to thinking of ideas for a possible Green Lantern pair of movies that has absolutely nothing to do with the Red and Blue Lanterns. The key is Hal Jordan vs. Sinestro. When Hal Jordan first became a Green Lantern, part of the Green Lantern Corps., Sinestro was assigned to instruct Jordan on what it means to be a Lantern. Jordan later confronted Sinestro on his methods of laying down order in Sinestro’s given sector of the galaxy. This led to Sinestro being cast out of the Green Lantern Corps. Recently Sinestro was able to unlock the power of yellow energy and create his own Lantern Corps with yellow rings instead of Green. The Green Lantern Corps. went to war with this Sinestro Corps. and won.

I think this relationship would be a great two-part movie. The first movie would focus on Jordan becoming a member of the Green Lantern Corps. Through his eyes the movie audience would be introduced to the galactic struggle and how the Green Lanterns help to keep the peace. Sinestro could be develped into a very important antagonist to Jordan because while he is a march harsher being, he is highly favored because he gets results. When Jordan finds out about his repressive methods, he feels betrayed by Sinestro and confronts him.

In the second movie, Sinestro is able to create the Sinestro Corps and engage the Green Lanterns. There are ways to introduce the Parallax and even Superboy/man Prime into this movie as well. John Stewart and Guy Gardner and Kyle Rayner can already be Lanterns for other parts of the galaxy and thus Gardner can become Parallax. Superman/boy Prime could be a clone of Superman or something, if they really wanted to use him. He has the potential to detract from the main focal point of Jordan vs Sinestro.

I really hope DC and Warner Bros really try to play up this relationship for their Green Lantern franchise. Oh I think the guy to play Green Lantern should be New Frontier’s David Boreanaz as Hal Jordan. I like it and he’s familiar with the character already. I’m not certain who would play Sinestro though.

That was Paul’s Point!

Karis Church in Columbia MO takes a weekend or two every year to bring in a noted Evangelical scholar to speak on doctrinal matters. Earlier this year that had Southern Seminary’s Dr. Tom Schreiner to speak on the topic “Who is Jesus.” I listened or attened all of the events and I must say that it was an enjoyable event. The debate was a little soft for Dr. Schreiner because he let a Muslim walk all over the concept of divine justice. Earlier this month, Dr. Bruce Ware–who was just elected as president of the Evangelical Theological Society (ETS)–came to speak on “Beholding the God of…” and had a discussion (they call it a debate but there was not cross-examination) on Jesus being the only way. I have listened to most of the audio and I enjoyed what I heard. But there was one part in the discussion that I want to comment on. Read more

Some Thoughts From Isaiah 40-55

Recently I began to read the Gospel of John in light of the lawsuit that Yahweh brings up in Isaiah 40-55Open Link in New Window. I have noted many parallels between the two and can see how John formulated his Gospel writing within the framework of Isaiah’s lawsuit. This lawsuit does something for John’s writing, namely it gives a courtroom setting for his testimony to and about Jesus. The words that we translate into English as “witness” and “eyewitness” and “to testify” in the Greek are not law-court terminology. But by placing the whole narrative within the framework of Isaiah’s lawsuit, the whole text is a legal witness. Very fascinating. Read Isaiah 42:18-43Open Link in New Window:15 to really see the lawsuit that is in play here in Isaiah 40-55Open Link in New Window. However, I want to comment on some things I found in Isaiah 40-55Open Link in New Window that I found very warming. Read more

Some Thoughts on John

I have been reading Richard Bauckham’s arguments for John’s Gospel to be historiography, if not the most historiographical of all four canonical Gospels, in his book Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony. One of the things he debunks is the idea that John was written by someone or a community that is not John the Elder mentioned in Papias (this is not to be confused with John the son of Zebedee seen in the Synpotics). I just want to recount some of his arguments found in chapters 14-17 of the book. Read more
