The San Diego Comic-Con Rundown on Iron-Man II

Here is the big Iron-Man 2 pannel from the Comic-Con that was held in San Diego. I am so so so so so so pumped about the potential of this movie. War Machine (Don Chealde) , Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) along with RDJ and Gwyneth Paltrow and John Favreau (directing and as Happy Hogan) from the first flick. Oh boy I can’t wait to see what War Machine will look like!!!!!!!

Don’t Tease Me Like That!

Every year there is the mother of all comic book conventions in San Diego, CA: San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). The biggie announcements are made at this convention that goes beyond mere comics to movies and TV shows. Robert Downey Jr. will attend this thing for his role as Tony Stark in the Iron-Man films. At every comic convention (I go to Wizard World, Chicago), Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada will have a Q and A session with readers that very rarely gives any answers. Take for example at the most resent Cup O’ Joe (as he calls it) when asked for more details about Cap: Reborn he says to keep reading. That’s his stock answer for every question. IGN reports a poll was taken after the question about Cap: Reborn,

Quesada polls – who wants Rogers as Cap, who wants Bucky as Cap? Seems to be a louder cheer for Bucky, but it’s close. “Cool! Two Cap books!” jokes [Marvel Publisher Dan] Buckley.

I know that’s not going to happen. If Steve doesn’t reclaim his mantle from Bucky after this Reborn story ends late this year or early next year, he will eventually. Bucky isn’t going to get his own Captain America book. And I’m not sure I would want him to get a separate book unless Ed Brubaker was to write it. My heart was gladdened to see Bucky get the louder cheer, if only barely, but do not tease me with an idea about Bucky staying Cap. You told me Steve was dead. You told me Captain America (Bucky) was going to reunite with Iron-Man and Thor. Don’t tease me with stuff like that. I might think your serious and get upset all over again.

Isaiah 53:11 and 2 Corinthians 5:21

In this post I want to move to a text that many contemporary exegetes and theologians have really disappointed me when they interpret Paul here, namely 2 Corinthians 5:21Open Link in New Window. In this post We’ll look at this text and how Isaiah 53:11Open Link in New Window impacts the text and how we should understand Paul here in light of it. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:17-21Open Link in New Window

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Paul here is speaking of God’s new creation that has come into effect through the reconciling work of Jesus Christ. Paul speaks of being Christ’s ambassador, pleading with the world to be reconciled to God. He is the means by which God appeals to the fallen and sinful world to come back to God and participate in the new creation. In reconciling the world to himself, God does not count their sins against them because, employing a traditional formula, the innocent Christ has become sin for our sake so that in him we can become God’s righteousness. Can I know if I am elect?

PADavis recently commented on a post I did some time ago on Romans 8:29-30Open Link in New Window. In that post I discussed what Paul means by predestination and foreknowledge. PADavis writes

I am still unclear if one knows or consciously realizes that he or she is predestined for salvation? I am Nazarene and Armenianism is the world/theological view presented here. So I am just learning about Calvinism and have always been curious as to how one knows whether he is saved or has been predestined by God. In our belief we say that “we know that we know we are indeed saved” when we have repented of our sins and asked Jesus Christ into our hearts. So does the Calvinist know he or she is truly saved or called by God?

I was going to respond in a comment but I thought this would be better answered in a separate post. First, my initial thoughts when reading this comment seem like there are actually two questions being asked, and I’m not sure if both are tintended. The first question, which is the first sentence in the comment, seems to deal with an unconverted person. The second question, the last sentence in the comment, seems to talk about a converted person. In other words it seems like question 1 is asking if an unconverted person knows if he or she is predestined to be saved. Question 2 is asking if the saved person can have an assurance of their salvation. I will answer both questions but if it is one or the other is intended and not both, then at least know I’m trying to answer what it is that is being asked and am sorry if I’m about to speak too long on something not in view. Nailed It!

Lane Tipton of WTS-Philly really gets Calvin, especially Calvin’s views on justification and that union with Christ is the foundation for out justification. It’s like the person of Jesus should come before the benefits of Jesus and yet somehow I find many evangelicals missing that. Hmph.

Justification: Act of God or Achievement of Man

Here is a discussion between James White and a sedevacantist that called his web-cast this past Thursday that really highlights how Roman Catholicism (even unorthodox Roman Catholicism) cannot walk through a text with a consistent reading. I found it to be a lot of fun.

His Best Contribution Ever

Captain America: Reborn #1

Captain America: Reborn #1

Jeph Loeb is not a guy I have liked in recent years. I don’t like the new Hulk comic he writes. The man destroyed the Ultimate universe for Marvel. I can’t watch the show Heroes anymore. It’s like the man lost his mojo after writing some really awesome Batman stuff, i.e. The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush. But the one thing he has said that has really actually helped me get into comics is when he kept telling Ed Brubaker about the Captain America title when Steve Rogers was killed,

Shouldn’t somebody wear a Cap costume in Cap’s book?

This helped lead Brubaker to putting Bucky into the Cpatain America role and draw me into comics. For that sir, I thank you. Now if only you would stop putting out such horrible crap!

Talbot on Calvin Being Controversial

As part of a teaser for the Desiring God National Convention this year on Calvin, Mark Talbot offers some wise words about why John Calvin is so controversial in church history.

Doug Wilson, who is also going to be at the conference with Talbot, offers these words.

NET Second Edition and Romans 2:27

Here is a blog post that details why the second edition of the NET has decided to change its translation of Romans 2:27 (NET)Open Link in New Window from,

And will not the physically uncircumcised man who keeps the law judge you who, despite the written code and circumcision, transgress the law?

to something like,

The physically uncircumcised man, by keeping the law, will judge you to be the transgressor of the law, even though you have the letter and circumcision!

Dan Wallace gets into some of the fun textual issues that come up in translating a text of Scripture from its original language (Greek in this case) into English. It always baffles me to see how a minute change in how one reads a single term can change the entire English translation, for example the change of a participle from adjectival (”the one who keeps”) to adverbial (”by keeping”). While the meaning doesn’t really change, I still enjoy the discussion.
