My Favorite Difference
Last night I was watching the DC Animated Death of Superman special feature that brought the creative team behind the comic book where Superman met his tragic demise at the hands of Doomsday and his resurrection to defeat Cyborg Superman and Mongul with the help of the three other Supermen and members of the JLA (i.e. Green Lantern Hal Jordan). One of the things they wanted to accomplish when they started telling the story of Superman’s return was to show that three copies of Superman (Steel, Superboy, Eradicator, and Cyborg Superman) could barely do the job that Superman did by himself. They tried to pick up the torch of Superman and run with it, only to not live up to the expectation.
When Ed Brubaker gave Steve Rogers’ mantle to his partner Bucky the idea was to use Bucky as a foil for the reader to understand Steve Rogers better and what it meant to be Captain America. Unlike DC and the Superman team, Brubaker tried to get the audience to buy into Bucky and believe in him as Captain America. Every time Bucky took a step forward in his new role as Cap, the reader cheered him on and celebrated that the disgruntled man was living up to Steve’s legend and bringing him honor. Now that Steve is on the verge of his rebirth/resurrection, many Cap readers don’t want Steve back, or at least donning the shield and cowl again. They want Bucky to stay AS Captain America. A very different picture from what happened when Superman died.
My favorite difference between Superman’s death and Steve Rogers’ death is the fact that when someone tried to replace Superman, it didn’t work and Kal-El was needed back. When someone tried to replace Steve, it worked and the new Captain America was embraced the world–both within the comic and by readership. Bucky was able to carry on in Steve’s place where the four Supermen weren’t able to carry on in Kal-El’s. There are other differences, but I really love this one.

So Beautiful
Captain America regular artist, Steve Epting, has been on a break due to burnout (drawing the same book for over five years will do that to a person) and because he has been asked to do the pencils for the official Marvel Universe origin story, Marvels Project. Here is some of his beautiful artwork. I cannot wait for Steve to return to my favorite book, Captain America.

Dark Reign: The List–Avengers
Since I started reading comics back in January, 2008–beginning with Bucky first putting on the Captain America costume and shield and picking up where Steve left off–I have really enjoyed the books that were well drawn, inked, and colored. I have definitely seen my reading of the genre to be much more nuanced than I had when I read some comics back in the 1990s when I was little boy. I see such little things like Captain America’s suit is made from a reflective material, so there should be a metalic reflection. Some artists pull it off, others don’t. Frank D’Armata, the regular colorist for the Captain America title, does a decent job getting that glean in the blue color of the suit. But whoever colored Marko Djurdjevic’s art in Dark Reign: The List–Avengers got it right. I really liked the job they did. Marko’s pencils are great (and inks if he did them) but what really hit me was how Cap was colored. Check it out Read more

Don’t Tease Me Like That!
Every year there is the mother of all comic book conventions in San Diego, CA: San Diego Comic Con (SDCC). The biggie announcements are made at this convention that goes beyond mere comics to movies and TV shows. Robert Downey Jr. will attend this thing for his role as Tony Stark in the Iron-Man films. At every comic convention (I go to Wizard World, Chicago), Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada will have a Q and A session with readers that very rarely gives any answers. Take for example at the most resent Cup O’ Joe (as he calls it) when asked for more details about Cap: Reborn he says to keep reading. That’s his stock answer for every question. IGN reports a poll was taken after the question about Cap: Reborn,
Quesada polls – who wants Rogers as Cap, who wants Bucky as Cap? Seems to be a louder cheer for Bucky, but it’s close. “Cool! Two Cap books!” jokes [Marvel Publisher Dan] Buckley.
I know that’s not going to happen. If Steve doesn’t reclaim his mantle from Bucky after this Reborn story ends late this year or early next year, he will eventually. Bucky isn’t going to get his own Captain America book. And I’m not sure I would want him to get a separate book unless Ed Brubaker was to write it. My heart was gladdened to see Bucky get the louder cheer, if only barely, but do not tease me with an idea about Bucky staying Cap. You told me Steve was dead. You told me Captain America (Bucky) was going to reunite with Iron-Man and Thor. Don’t tease me with stuff like that. I might think your serious and get upset all over again.

His Best Contribution Ever
Shouldn’t somebody wear a Cap costume in Cap’s book?
This helped lead Brubaker to putting Bucky into the Cpatain America role and draw me into comics. For that sir, I thank you. Now if only you would stop putting out such horrible crap!

Captain America
One of my favorite things about going to a comic book convention is seeing all of the costumes that people make at home. There are contests that people can compete in to win a possible prize. People will dress up as any character in a comic from Superman to Batman to Captain America to Darth Vader to the Predator and Aliens from the movies (there are comics invloving these two movie franchises). I have not seen someone dress up as Captain America since Bucky has taken up the mantle in the wake of Steve Rogers’ untimely demise in the book. Here is a clip of somone dressed up as Captain America and has done a very good job I must say. Even got the gun right too.

Captain America #600
This Friday I will probably pick up Captain America #48, the comic being my fictional get away. As part of the Marvel 75th anniversary, certain comic books are getting their original numbering. Earlier this year, Thor went to #600 instead of #13(?) (it is the 13th issue of the current run which started at #1 but this is the #600 of the Thor title). Captain America is one book that gets its original numbering back. This June Cap will be #600 instead of #51. Comic artist genius Alex Ross, noted for his Kingdom Come and The Marvels as well as helped design Bucky’s Cap costume, was asked to draw a variant cover with Steve Epting’s regular cover. I must say, both covers are gorgeous artwork. But Ross’ work would have gone better with Captain America #34 than #600. Since I haven’t read #600 I can’t be too certain of such a statement. Here is the 50/50 cover of this milestone issue. Oh and congrats to Ed Brubaker, Steve Epting, Luke Ross and company for 50 wonderful issues of Captain America–comic writers and artists don’t stay with a book like that, not to mention keeping it as good as it is for all published 47 issues

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Trailer 2
Marvel.com now has the new trailer to the sequel to the mega-hit Marvel Ultimate Alliance (MUA). Where as MUA had its own original storyline that had its own original storyline that incorporated elements of the regular Marvel universe and the Ultimate universe, MUA2 will use two existing storylines from the comics and they seem to go panel for panel, Secret War and Civil War. I like it a lot. Here’s the trailer.
I don’t think the current Captain America will be in this story for two reasons: a.) he wasn’t Captain America but rather Winter Soldier and b.) his role was major to the Captain America title but I’m not certain he appeared in the main Civil War title. If he is in the game–and I hope so–he better not be that…words allude me…annoying character that was in MUA that did not reflect who the Winter Soldier was in Burbaker’s comic. If you play the game and read the comic, there is a major disconnect that just cannot be repaired. However I think MUA2 will be amazing if they do a good job explaining Hulk and Thor’s presence–Thor was dead and a clone appeared in the book while Hulk had been sent to another planet–and follow Bendis’ (Secret War) and Millar’s (Civil War) titles. The Civil War title in particular was really good despite of the delays in publication. Hopefully the current Captain America costume will be an alternate to Steve Rogers or to Bucky if he appears as the Winter Soldier.

Ed Brubaker on Cap and Lady Bullseye
Here is a video interview of my favorite comic writer Ed Brubaker, author of my favorite comic Captain America, where he talks about Cap and Steve Roger’s old flame Sharon Carter (old flame and killer…weird but fun).
