Music in the Church
Posted by Hank on August 7th, 2009 filed in EcclesiologyI don’t know what it is, but I really don’t like the music I hear on the radio to be sung when I am participating in praising Christ through corporate singing. I feel like there is a loss of reverence when there is a Christian rock concert going on in front of me. If I want the rock concert, I’ll go to Rock the Light in KC or turn on the radio. Don’t get me wrong, a guy like Chris Tomlin can write some excellent music that really shows reverence for God and doesn’t present shallow theology but really probes. But I don’t need an entire service that is written by Christ Tomlin to play on the radio. For everything there is a season. Music for the radio should be left on the radio.
I know I can sound like an old person complaining about singing hymns because that’s just what we are supposed to do. I am not that. All music is new at some point. Not all music are meant to show reverence for God. I’m not rejecting a lot of the music I hear because they are new. Rather I’m saying there is no element of reverence. Just watch as a “praise group” gets the drums a rockin’ and the guitars a rollin’. It can really pull a person in a wrong way.
Or it could just be me too.
